Blogging Writing Sally’s Garden FEFSN Fort Erie Food Security Network – Fighting Against Poverty in Fort Erie Ontario Canada
the idea girl says
I still work on the Fort Erie Tourism Project, but now Harry and I are branching out into other Community Events, Programs and Services that take our interest.
After having a meeting with Mary Anne at Bridges, we learned she’s involved in many interesting programs.
Deb told me about the FEFSN before and showed me a flyer last year, but i was too busy to get involved with it.
So in November while at a meeting we were chatting with Mary Anne and I mentioned the fact that I would like to use some of my personal working, previous career related skills to help my community.
I told her my strengths are in blogging, organizing things, fundraising and all sorts of things i’ve done for the past 30 years or more…
Today Harry and I attending our first FEFSN Fort Erie Food Security Network Board Meeting!
We felt pretty important when we got to sit in on the meeting and VOTE on the new LOGO for FEFSN
so that was cool!
Rhonda welcomed us to the Board Meeting and thank you to Mary Anne she’s advised them how we can assist with this community project.
I like a challenge and they have several things that they will need to make the Community Kitchen project at Sally’s Garden (Salvation Army Church on Gilmore Rd in Fort Erie ontario Canada) a success.
they have gotten $25,000 from a United Way campaign and they are applying for various grants to help deal with the costs of setting up the program, so that is awesome.
I heard about community gardens while I lived in st catharines a few years ago. They have this huge garden for the native people and people on various social assistance programs.
they also grow food for the local food banks, and today i found out were going to be doing the same thing here.
My original plan was to develop a daily soup kitchen for lunch and supper here in Fort Erie, Ridgeway and Crystal Beach for the many needy families that live here.
it’s usually 150 to 200 people that turn out for these meals.
There is a bit of a problem with transportation for some, because they cannot afford to buy bus tickets, or get a ride.
Many of them walk weather permitting so that’s a challenge to address as well.
I know in st catharines, you could get a free bus ticket when you came to the soup kitchen (it was only valid for that date)
the problem is some of the soup kitchen programs run after 5 pm and the last bus leaves Jarvis Street in Fort Erie at 530 pm, so people cannot get a ride back home or out to ridgeway or crystal beach.
so not only do we need a bus ticket program, we need our local transit to run later hours, till about 10 pm would be great, even for people that are working I’ll bet they could use the buses too.
here’s some of the organizations I learned about today – 12 Nov 2014 at the meeting at Bridges in Fort Erie from 11 am till 1 pm
I’ve updated my LinkedIn profile. We sat on the board today and we are now board members! 🙂
